Today, approximately 65% of the province is experiencing some level of drought. Scientists point to a combination of hotter, drier summers, declining mountain snowpack, glacier loss, and reduced groundwater recharge as key factors reshaping the province’s water cycle. These changes are affecting drinking water supplies, river ecosystems, agriculture, and even hydroelectric power generation, illustrating how drought has become a province-wide water management challenge rather than a seasonal event.
The report argues that while British Columbia has taken important steps, including the introduction of the Water Sustainability Act and the B.C. Drought Information Portal, implementation has not kept pace with the scale of the challenge. Researchers recommend accelerating watershed planning, restoring natural systems that store and recharge water, improving water-use monitoring, modernizing water allocation and pricing, and placing greater emphasis on conservation and demand management alongside new storage solutions.
The findings reinforce the importance of comprehensive, watershed-scale approaches to understanding and managing water resources. Initiatives like Canada1Water (C1W) demonstrate how integrated hydrological modelling and climate data can support this transition by providing detailed insights into water availability, watershed dynamics, and future climate impacts. By enabling science-based planning across entire river basins, C1W helps inform the proactive water management strategies that will become increasingly important as drought conditions intensify across British Columbia and other regions of Canada.
