Dr. Steve Frey

Dr. Frey is a Senior Scientist at Aquanty Inc, and an Adjunct Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Waterloo. He received his B.Sc. (2005) in Geology at the University of Western Ontario, and his PhD (2011) in Earth Sciences at the University of Waterloo. Following his PhD, Steve was a Visiting Fellow at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, where he conducted research on the impact of agriculture on surface water and groundwater resources. He has recognized expertise across a broad spectrum of topics in hydrology, including: near surface soil physical characterization, preferential flow and transport processes, subsurface drainage, microbial fate and transport, and the fate and transport of pharmaceutical compounds. In addition to ongoing work on the aforementioned topics, he is also currently conducting research on the effects of climate variability on water resources.

What is your role in the C1W project?

I’m the C1W project co-PI (principal investigator), along with Hazen Russell from the GSC. I’m the HGS modeling lead, overseeing the work of the Aquanty team.

What benefits do you think C1W will bring to Canada/Canadians?

C1W will result in greatly improved understanding of climate change related risks to groundwater and surface water resources at the national scale. The project will improve Canada’s ability to plan mitigation strategies for climate change impacts through the use of datasets, publications, and webtools that will be produced.
